Repetition

Another very good reason for proof-reading your work prior to publishing, as well as identifying grammatical and spelling errors, is to check for repetition, particularly of the same adjectives.

Even the most polished of copy can lose its gloss when the same descriptive words are used more than once…it is easy to fall into this trap, but it is important to avoid it if you want your copy to have maximum impact.

One easy way of avoiding it is to print out your work prior to publishing and circle or highlight all the adjectives, you will quickly see which words (if any) are present more than once. A thesaurus (hard copy or online) is invaluable when searching for an alternative word.
